Aptus loses a cherished supporter - Herb Goldstein
On October 26, Aptus was saddened to lose long-time supporter Herb Goldstein, after a valiant fight with cancer. Herb and Marsha first came to Aptus as parents to Jordan Goldstein, a participant in Aptus’ day programs and a resident in Aptus’ first home.
Herb and Marsha celebrated Jordan’s immense artistic talents, proudly attending Aptus’ gallery evenings, where many of Jordan’s paintings of nature were featured.
In 2012, the Goldstein family lost Jordan to Leukemia. In his memory, Camp Jordan was established, a camp experience for adults with complex disabilities to explore nature as Jordan had. Herb became a leader at Aptus, heading the Camp Jordan project. Herb worked alongside program staff to plan and build a camp experience which would build self-esteem and confidence. Herb organized and contributed to this video about Camp Jordan, which highlights its goals, activities and impact.
Now in its third year, Camp Jordan has over 60 campers and support staff. Nature experiences include hiking, zip-lining, obstacle courses and horseback riding. Campers share that they break the boundaries of what they think they can do. The camp has also been a first experience of a vacation for many campers.
Herb has also lent his time to the Marketing and Development Committee. A seasoned marketing expert, Herb tirelessly edited copy, donated printing services and was an advocate for common language marketing which is more accessible.
Possibly closest to his heart, Herb has been a passionate voice for people with disabilities. He has advocated for additional services needed for children, teens and adults served by Aptus.
Herb will be greatly missed by all staff and adults in programs at Aptus. His big smile, welcoming manner and open mind will be remembered forever.
To make a donation in Herb’s memory, the Goldstein family asks that all donations be directed to the Herb Memorial Fund for Camp Jordan. Please donate by phone to 416-630-2222 or donate online (after reaching our donation page, click on “General Donation” to choose “Herb Goldstein Memorial Fund”).
